The Exception Request Decision Tree is provided to facilitate individuals and units in determining if an Accessibility Exception Request must be requested for a given Electronic Information Technology (EIT). This document supports the Accessibility Exception Categories document.

Decision Tree

To determine if an Accessibility Exception Request must be requested for an EIT, follow the decision tree below.

  1. Is this EIT intended for unit-wide, campus-wide, or public use?
    • YES: You must request an exception. Contact your unit head to begin the exception request process. You must provide an accessible alternative access plan.
    • NO: Go on to Step2.
  2. Is this EIT for internal use on a research project where no individuals with a disability are part of the research team?
    • YES: An exception is automatically granted. Be prepared to provide an accessible means of alternative access if a person with a disability joins the research team.
    • NO: Go on to Step3.

    Note: Any public-facing webpages used to showcase or otherwise share information about the research project must be made accessible to persons with disabilities.

  3. Will the software or hardware be required for student use or be elective but feature prominently in the classroom experience?
    • YES: You must request an exception.Contact your unit head to begin the exception request process. You must provide an accessible alternative access plan.
    • NO: Go on to Step4.
  4. Will a staff, faculty member, or student (such as a GA), with a known disability be required to use the software?
    • YES: You must request an exception. Contact your unit head to begin the exception request process. You must provide an accessible alternative access plan.
    • NO: Contact the ADA Coordinator to discuss your use case and to determine if your unit must obtain an exception request approvalin order touse the EIT.
