We have multiple topics this month:

  • Bryan Jonker would like feedback on a grid component for the Blazor framework: QuickGrid for Blazor.
  • Melissa Waller would like to discuss how to make accessible organizational (i.e. org) charts. Most of what she's found involves nested accordions or nested lists. What software/tools/resources/tips have you found for making accessible org charts? (see Melissa's post in the Web on Campus / IT Accessibiliy Teams channel for more details and links to some examples)

This is part 2 in a 3-part series highlighting PDF flipbook alternatives.

Bryan Jonker will join us to share his experience using 11ty to develop the College of Education’s 2022 Impact Report, 2021 Impact Report, and 2020 Impact Report as static websites. He will discuss the pros and cons of using a static site generator to produce a digital magazine experience, including the compromises you need to make in transitioning from a pixel-perfect magazine-style PDF layout to a mobile-friendly responsive website. There are benefits and drawbacks to this approach, so it may not be right for everyone, but there are distinct advantages for accessibility, usability, and a host of other reasons that make it worth considering.

Join us to see if this flipbook alternative might be a good candidate for creating digital magazine experiences for your unit!

You can view the Impact Report GitHub project if you’d like to see the underlying code.

Melissa Waller is investigating how to put gorgeously designed books and brochures online in an engaging way. This typically involves uploading a PDF to a site like Issuu, which provides an interactive viewer for the PDF, but also introduces accessibility concerns.

You can find an initial discussion in the WIGG Content channel in Teams (requires U of I login) of the following options:

A special Pi Day treat - we have a Publish.Illinois.Edu (P.I.E) themed topic!

Dena Strong is working on identifying some quality of life tools for Publish.illinois.edu users as well as some replacements for existing plugins that their creators haven’t updated for 5-10 years now.

She has created a site called Learning Curve for testing out plugins for potential use with Publish.illinois.edu and would like to get feedback on calendar-related and other quality of life plugins. Let's take a look at the plugins and see how they stack up!

If you would like to look at the content creator/contributor interfaces for the plugins in advance, please email Michael McKelvey or email Dena Strong for access.
